My wife and I always said that when we bought our house our first big purchase would be a Nest thermostat. We were hoping that it would save us money on heating and air conditioning, as well as be more environmentally friendly, since the Nest thermostat runs more efficiently. We also thought it would be a great way for us to check in on our house when we weren’t home. We didn’t realize how much it would save us and how quickly.
We took a week-long trip out of town to visit my sister six hours away. We had mentioned to some family members over dinner that night that we had the Nest thermostat and how much we loved it. I showed them that it was possible to adjust the temperature remotely and they were pretty impressed.
That’s when I noticed that it said the current temperature in our house was 55 degrees. I was unsure how that could be possible, but had some family run over and verify it was that cold, just in case. It happened to be the coldest day of the year in our town and was going to be below zero degrees the rest of the week. Because of Nest, we were able to find out that our furnace was having an issue and we called the HVAC experts to fix the problem.
I can only imagine what would’ve happened with our pipes if we hadn’t checked that night, or hadn’t even bought a Nest in the first place. We were able to avoid thousands of dollars worth of damage, since it was only a matter of time before a pipe was going to burst. I can’t express how happy we were to avoid that headache in our new house.
