We are excited to announce the release of Fire OS 6 for Fire TV, based on Android Nougat (Android 7.1.2, level 25). This will be a major update for Fire OS, currently based on Android Lollipop (Android 5.1, level 21), adding several new features such as:
- Picture in Picture (PiP): Allowing users to pin a video to a corner of the screen while navigating to other areas in an app.
- Content Recording: Allowing users to record content on Fire TV, similar to a DVR.
- Time-shifting APIs: Allowing users to pause, rewind, or fast-forward live content.
The all-new Fire TV, announced on September 27th, marks the debut of Fire OS 6. Previous Fire TV devices will not be up-leveled to at this time.
